Book Out Today: Firelight by Sophie Jordan!
Hello to my loyal subjects. : )
Today is Tuesday, which means new books! In this post, I want to spotlight one book in particular. Check out the synopsis:
A HIDDEN TRUTH
Marked as special at an early age, Jacinda knows her every move is watched. But she longs for freedom to make her own choices. When she breaks the most sacred tenet of her kind, she nearly pays with her life, only to be spared by a beautiful stranger sent to hunt those like her. For Jacinda is a draki--a descendant of dragons whose ability to shift into human form is her best defense.
Forced to flee into the mortal world, Jacinda struggles to adapt. The one bright light is Will. Gorgeous, elusive Will who stirs her inner draki to life. Although she is irrestibly drawn to him, Jacinda knows Will's dark secret: He and his family are hunters. She should avoid him at all costs. But her inner draki is slowly slipping away - if it dies she will be left a human forever. She'll do anything to prevent that. Even if it means getting closer to her most dangerous enemy.
Mythical powers and irresistible passion ignite in this story of a girl who defies all expectations and whose love crosses an ancient divide ...
When I first heard about this novel, I honestly thought, blah. I mean, forbidden love, dragons, hunters, etc. It seemed very cliche to me at first glance.
Until I read an excerpt.
Oh my goodness, the writing is fantastic. It's poetic without being too wordy, uses unique similes and adjectives, and is simply exquisite. And, even though it used the old forbidden love formula, the romance is still fantastic and, as far as I saw (I was only able to read about nine chapters on Harper Teen) everything seemed well-paced in the relationship between Jacinda and Will (and it does help that Will is gorgeous. But, I digress.) What intrigued me as a fantasy lover was the part about dragons. It is definitely not your average dragon tale, folks. She created a dragon species called the Draki, are here are a few reasons why they are different from most other dragon books that I've read:
1. None of them can breathe fire except for one (and I bet you can guess who that is.)
2. Each one has a different magical ability, such as ones dealing with water.
3. They can morph into humans, but certain people and places can sap their Draki form and leave them human (or do the opposite: morph them back into Draki while in human form.)
4. They live in a world clouded by the shield of Draki smoke (I know another world isn't original, but I thought the smoke part is really cool).
I also loved Jacinda. She's headstrong and doesn't seem to fall into the TSTL trap too often.
So, what are you waiting for? Go out to Barnes and Noble or Borders or your favorite indie bookstore and pick up a copy!
